COMMUNITY WELLNESS.
To increase health awareness and improve overall health and quality of life of the refugee community, our Community Wellness program conducts regular in-home visits, health workshops, and special projects such as our youth summer camp.
Women’s Health Project.
The Women's Health Project focuses on promoting women's health by offering six sessions, three in Arabic and three in Dari, held twice a week for three weeks. Our clients have the opportunity to learn about their mental, emotional, and physical well-being from an experienced educator from Washington County. In the near future, we plan to extend this program to Spanish and Ukrainian speakers.
Youth Refugee Sustainability Leadership Program.
This project focused on educating refugee youth about their new environment with the goal of creating a sense of belonging in their new homes. The project provided educational workshops on specific environmental topics, including watersheds, native plants, recycling, and eco-friendly cleaning alternatives, which were prepared and facilitated by environmental educators. Following the workshops, practical applications were implemented, including hikes and natural walks in the Tryon Creek watershed to enhance their understanding of the area. Additionally, the group was tasked with planting native plants in the Leach Botanical Garden. The final assignment involved creating an outreach plan to teach their communities about recycling and the use of safer detergents, and sharing their results with the group.
CAMP SILAH, of Project Untangled, is a summer camp for the youth, ages 8-18, for the Portland metropolitan area. It was launched in the summer of 2018. This camp blended refugee kids with non-refugee kids in a beautiful harmonious way and made the refugee kids feel like they belong to the Portland community. There were 130 children who attended this year, half of them were refugees.
